Hours are cut and they give you the new hires no other department wanted. Which is, in itself, a chore given that fish shipments can often be like 30-40 bags you need to float, net, and release individually.Īnd "Live" and "Pet Specialty" sales make up the lowest margin/profit for the store, so who do you think ALWAYS gets screwed? Pet care. And you do all this while receiving shipments throughout the day. All of this while helping customers as the only person scheduled in pet care (they'd usually give you one other person on a 4-hr morning shift). Maybe set a layout or planogram all while stocking the pet care product the truck crew left for you that they were supposed to finish but didnt because they're lazy. Then you have to clean and feed your cat adoption center. Then you have to knock out some tank siphoning, scrub out your lock lines, and change your prefilters. Then you have to take your small animals to their appointments. Then you have your full-habitat breakdowns for the day (where you completely break down the habitat and santitize). Then you clean out dead bugs a bit and feed and gel-water them. Then you grab your cart and spot clean and feed and water all your small animals, birds, and reptiles. Then you come out, check your communications binder. Make appointments at Banfield for those that need a check or re-check. This entails the quiet room (healthy new arrivals) and the sick room (sick animals). So here's a Petsmart animal care day in a nutshell: you walk in before open, and you do the backrooms while you can before you have to deal with customers. It can take an hour sometimes between setting up appointments, cleaning syringes, catching birds. Which is great, but if you get a shitty small animal shipment you may have 20 full tubs/cages/tanks in the back that are full of animals that need individual treatment. For example, they'll say it should take 20 minutes (or whatever) to medicate all the animals in the sick room. And basically, Petsmart has these timeframe windows for what they've determined certain tasks should be completed within. Your ASM or Store Manager will write the schedule for the store using a planner tool that measures their schedule efficiency. It's honestly not even the fault of the people that work over there in that department (USUALLY). If your Petsmart sucks it's cuz their management sucks. All you do is fill up two 5 gallon buckets with RO water from the sink, let them acclimate to room temp, add some stress coat/conditioner (sometimes salt), and grab a net and start swapping everyone out. Pet Supplies Plus is probably the best because it's a lot more manageable space, but they're all pretty much the same.īettas, by SOP, are done upon receipt and then 2 times a week after that. Then I got an opportunity to be the full-time Aquatics Specialist for Petco as an in to be an ASM and, finally, a Store Manager for Pet Supplies Plus. I've ran commercial systems for over a decade and, over the years, I kept getting promoted while changing stores. Want to contribute to our wiki? Request a flair? Please message the mods.
